The Beginner's Bible Review and Giveaway

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

My family loves the Zondervan Beginner's Bible. We have owned several copies over time and have loved those books until the pages were tattered and the covers were worn. Having owned this Bible previously, the first thing I noticed when I opened this copy was the pictures. The colors and pictures are revised and updated. They are so much more vibrant that they were in the previous version. As far as I can tell, the stories remained the same, but the updating done to this version of the Bible will help it continue to be a premiere Bible for young children.

The stories found in The Beginner's Bible are well selected to give young children an overview of the Bible while giving them some of the most well known and loved stories from the Bible. If you take a peek at the video below, I think you'll see what I mean. I'm so excited to have a new and updated copy of this Bible...especially now that my children are a little older and treat books with care. I expect this copy of the Beginner's Bible to last us for many years to come.

From the Publisher about the Bible:
The Beginner’s Bible® has been a favorite with young children and their parents since its release in 1989 with over 25 million products sold. Now it’s redesigned with fresh new art that will excite children for many more years to come. Full of faith and fun, The Beginner’s Bible is a wonderful gift for any child. The easy-to- read text and bright, full-color illustrations on every page make it a perfect way to introduce young children to the stories and characters of the Bible. With new vibrant three-dimensional art and compelling text, more than 90 Bible stories come to life. Kids ages 6 and under will enjoy the fun illustrations of Noah helping the elephant onto the ark, Jonah praying inside the fish, and more, as they discover The Beginner's Bible just like millions of children before. The Beginner's Bible was named the 2006 Retailers Choice Award winner in Children's Nonfiction.

When Jesus was a Green Eyed Brunette Review and Giveaway

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my review.

I work part-time in a job that started as a "Holiday Seasonal" position. I happen to work for a toy company and Christmas is the busiest time of the year. Working with customers day in and day out, I become a little jaded against people by this point in the year. Everyone wants something, I deal with lots of impatience and anger each day, and I have trouble finding the "Peace that Passes Understanding" and keeping compassion in my heart.

This book absolutely gob-smacked me. I was floored by revelation after revelation from the Holy Spirit of how God moves and works in us today. The book is written quite humbly by Max Davis and he shows us that each and every one of us can sometimes forget the depth of love that Jesus has for us in His heart. These are short chapters and I took to reading them as a sort of devotional. One each day to meditate on and hold me through until the next day. Something to focus on when I was dealing with angry people who were putting me in a position where I was about to not show the love of Christ.

I am loving this book and hope you will consider giving it a read. It is worth the time. I also have a copy to give away (see below). Have a very Merry Christmas and let Christ rule in your hearts all year round!

From the Publisher:
About the Book:When Jesus Was a Green-Eyed Brunette weaves heartwarming and miraculous stories of Jesus showing up in ordinary people, revealing that He knows us and is fully present in our everyday circumstances, especially in our difficulties. Those hurting and weary from worn-out religion are longing for a fresh touch from the living Jesus. Best-selling author Max Davis challenges us to do more than simply receive God’s grace—we need to allow grace to soften, change, and shape us. As you read this book you will laugh, cry, and come face-to- face with the living Jesus, much like Davis did, when he found Him living in a green-eyed brunette. As Davis puts it, “Jesus is very much alive today and still does incredible things—sometimes supernatural things—through us!”

About the Author:Max Davis is the author of over 20 published books and has been featured in USA Today and Publishers Weekly and has appeared on The Today Show and The 700 Club. He holds degrees in Journalism and Biblical Studies and is a much sought-after speaker for churches and organizations worldwide. He and his wife, Alanna, live on 50 beautiful acres in Greenwell Springs, Louisiana.

Christmas Love Letters From God-Book Review and #Giveaway

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are mine.

We have a family tradition of a Christmas book basket. When the kids were little, we added a new book for each of them each year until we had one story for each day until Christmas. While it's true that "the kids" are older now and these picture, pop up and board books are far beneath their reading ability, I still like to bring out the book basket each Christmas season.

When I read about this book, I knew it would be a terrific addition to our basket. I wasn't disappointed either! I'm absolutely in love with this book and since mine are older, I'm going to take it with me to a friend's house so I can read it with her little one. I love the illustrations which are so vibrantly colored and incredibly engaging. And the story makes the birth of Jesus much more real. Plus, the love letters themselves. It really makes the book. The letters REALLY open up so you can read them.

From the publisher:
CHRISTMAS LOVE LETTERS from God:
Written for children ages four to eight, Christmas Love Letters from God cleverly combines both prose and poetry as the story of Jesus’ birth unfolds. The book includes seven stories, beginning with Isaiah’s prophecy and ending with the visit of the wise men. Following each story, the child will find his or her own letter from God, folded into a small envelope attached to the page. Each letter begins with a space in which to write the child’s name, so each one can be specially addressed to the child.
Written as if God is speaking, each personalized message gives the young reader a sense of wonder as they discover anew the Christmas holiday and the birth of Jesus. A very special Bible verse, entitled God’s Perfect Promise, also accompanies each story and letter as God’s personal words of love, promise, and hope.

Groupon Coupons for Extra Savings during the Holidays (and year round)

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I believe everyone has heard of Groupon by now. If not, it's a terrific savings site where you can purchase vouchers for dining, places, events or buy discounted goods. But did you know there is also an entire Groupon Coupon section on the site? It was something I "think" I knew, but I hadn't seriously looked into the coupons until now.

For me, I'm still all about saving money year round, but especially at the holidays where expenses increase. Some of the things I need (for both gifts and because we have growing children) is new socks, underwear, shirts, etc. Sean loves Hanes brand socks. He would prefer to wear nothing else. His favorite socks have become hard to find in stores, but I can get them online. Well, how excited was I to discover there are Hanes Groupon Coupons for both in store purchases and online orders. If I want to run to the Hanes store, I'm covered. If I choose to shop online, still get a discount. Savings (and socks and underwear) are in the bag!

I also find excellent deals for both home use and gifts at Overstock.com. Did you know that Groupon Coupons has more than 50 Coupons available for Overstock.com? Looking for a very specific sort of deal? I like to click on the "sales" option in the coupons so I can easily find coupons to use for Bath Fixtures or Coffee and Coffee Accessories (those make great gifts for coffee lovers).

Remember, the next time you go shopping either in store or online, check out Groupon Coupons for discount offers.

All natural cleaning - pretty amazing results

Friday is still pretty busy for me since our high school team is ranked #1 in the state and we are in playoffs. I spend my afternoon cooking and taking food to school so we can feed a gaggle of hungry high school band students.

Recently, I had several major spills and boil-overs in my oven. It was looking like this:

Today before lunch, I sprinkled half a box of baking soda all over the bottom of the oven, then dribbled vinegar over the baking soda. I let it bubble and foam, and let it sit for an hour while Sean and I had lunch.

Came home and used paper towels and a pot scraper (the kind used to clean baking stoneware). For very little effort, here was my result:

It's not perfect, but for fast cleaning and no chemicals, I'm impressed. I only spent 15-20 minutes and got this far. I intend to do a second round on the stubborn spots, but I'm thrilled it will no longer smell like burned food each time I cook.

I have been trying to use less chemicals in our home and think this might be a winner!

Deal seeker? Try Groupon Goods

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Who here is a deal seeker? (Me--frantically waving hand in the air!) I like nice things, but my husband insists I am allergic to paying retail. Since I seem to want nice things at a nice (aka discounted) price, I have to find some alternate places to shop. Online has become a place I turn to because I can find good deals on my time and never have to leave the house.

Groupon Goods is one of the places I regularly look at for things I'm shopping for. I love how everything on the site has been discounted. Recently, I've been keeping an eye out for all sort of electronics. Nathan keeps talking about needing a new computer. Our church is needing some new TVs and will also need the mounting hardware to put on a wall. Andrew and Rebekah are both talking about needing new headphones. So I headed into Groupon Goods to see what I could find.

Check out these two computers I am keeping an eye on for Nathan. He's doing more and more on his computer and his is old enough that he might be right that a new one is around the corner for us.

Check out this deal I found for our church. I couldn't believe the mounting hardware was so inexpensive!

Here was a great deal I found on headphones for the other two kids.

If you are looking for great bargains on items, be sure to check out Groupon Goods. I also recommend following the Groupon Facebook Page for articles giving tips and tricks to get the most out of your Groupons and Groupon Goods items.

And let me know what deals you find!

The Afters CD - Live On Forever - Review and Giveaway

Disclosure: I received this CD in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Have you heard any of the songs from The Afters newest CD? It's titled Live On Forever and the music is engaging, toe-tapping and shower sing along worthy. I hadn't read all the information about the CD before listening to it. I wanted to listen on my own and not be swayed by the cover blurbs. But the song 'Battles' spoke to me so strongly in my current season of life. I've had a big transition summer with my oldest going to college and my younger two moving from middle to high school and elementary to middle school. With change, there's a lot of adjustments and sometimes, battles to make sure my son's special needs are taken into account. I sometimes get bogged down in the idea that my battles are hard and I can't go on.

But then, I heard these lyrics:
Time after time you're my refuge,You heal every scar you're guarding my heart.Your promise, the hope that I cling to,My rescue, my friend you come rushing in.
And surround me on every sideYour love is my armor I fear no evil.Darkness runs from your lightSo I won't be afraid, I won't be afraid

I knew God was speaking to me. You can watch the video below and hear for yourself. After listening, I then read the information about the album. It's incredible.

About Live On Forever:
It’s easy to assume stories of trial and triumph are just for the Bible or the history books. But miracles still happen, even when adversity hits hardest. Just ask Josh Havens, guitarist and lead vocalist of The Afters. He relates how the band’s latest effort, Live on Forever, began during a season of tragedy.
Just as the band regrouped to record, Havens witnessed the wife of a close friend contract cancer. Drummer Jordan Mohilowski (who produced the new album) had a brief health scare, and a close companion in his church—part of the worship team—was hit and killed by an impaired driver. She was a young woman, Havens says, who had unlimited potential.
But Live on Forever–the band’s fifth with the Fair Trade label-still took shape as a celebration of faithfulness, protection and promise—one that shimmers with strong rhythms, undeniable energy and compelling pop hooks. The album finds Havens in strong, soaring voice as he invites listeners to find shelter and strength in God. “If any theme has emerged, it would be ‘inspiration and motivation,’” Havens says.
Havens himself felt a deep need to hold on after another loss struck: The band’s longtime soundman, Anthony Martinez, saw his newborn daughter die in infancy.
Ask Havens to pick out a song that sums up the spirit of the album, and he chooses “Battles.” “It was the last song we wrote and the fastest we wrote,” he says. “We don’t typically write songs fast; we’ll change lyrics and melodies and craft our songs carefully. But ‘Battles’ poured out, the music and lyrics, in one day. It’s about standing up against fear and knowing God is always with us,” Havens explains. “It’s one of the takeaways we hope people get: ‘Don’t give up to fear.
Havens shares how, half a world away from his home in Phoenix, he caught a small glimpse of heaven’s reassurance. The place: downtown Amsterdam. The occasion: a dinner between shows with band members and spouses—including soundman Martinez and his wife. For their baby daughter, the Martinez couple had chosen an unusual moniker with an unusual spelling: Pieper. Against all odds, it also happened to be exactly how the intimate restaurant they dined at spelled its name. Still, no one was prepared for what happened at the end of the meal. “We were talking about baby Pieper, and as we got up to leave, we noticed that the only thing on the walls—the only thing—was a framed document, an award for hospitality. And the date on the award—the only date in the place—was Pieper’s birthday. Her mother just started bawling.” Havens sums up the reassurance all took home that night: “We thought, ‘This is where God’s angels fly: right in the middle of the loss.’ God gives us little glimpses to show us he’s here.”
“We worked on this record for almost two years and over those two years, it was a real season of loss,” Havens recalls. “But in the end, Live on Forever is about moving us to trust God, to stand up against fear. It’s an ‘ante up’ record, an anthem for people’s lives: ‘God you are with me in all this. I’m not alone.’”

Family Fare Supermarket Labor Day Sales - and a Giveaway!

Disclosure: I was provided with gift cards from Family Fare in exchange for this blog post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

If you remember, I was able to participate in the grand re-opening of several stores that are now part of the Family Fare Supermarket chain. There was a lot of activities that came with the grand opening and it was really exciting and fun to participate in.

Since then, I've been regularly shopping at Family Fare and I love the "Yes Card" that helps me earn fuel discounts and other savings. I've even learned some excellent tips about using your Yes Card to the fullest advantage. Did you know Family Fare has online coupons that can load directly to your Yes Card? The weekly ad is also found online to help with creating your grocery list. I prefer to shop the sales and stock up when I can. And each Friday, there is a coupon for a free item that you can load to your card for your next visit.

I don't know about you, but I'm excited to have a whole bunch of people visiting this weekend and we will be doing a big grill out night over the weekend. I ran to Family Fare to stock up using the Labor Day ad to maximize my savings. I'm so excited about the menu I created for this cook-out.

Look at all those beautiful ears of corn. I picked up plenty since it was only $3 for 10 ears. What a bargain. In fact, our family was so excited, we had to have some of the ears with dinner because we couldn't wait.

Then I found the seedless watermelon. Why buy just one for the company and the cook-out? Instead, I bought two so we could eat one during the week and another one this weekend. And be sure to check out that price! At only $2.77 each, you can see why I got extras.

From there, I had to get the pop we need to get through the long weekend. And you know it's fun when you have Pepsi drinkers, Coke drinkers and Dr. Pepper drinkers. It's usually impossible to get all brands on sale--but not this week! All varieties of Pepsi, Coke and Dr. Pepper/7Up are on sale this week. Four 12-packs for $8.88 (limit 4, must purchase 4). I was able to mix and match my four packs to what my guests and I all want.

Like Busch's Baked Beans? Give the Our Family
variety a try. They are delicious!
Finally, I stopped to get the burgers I want to grill. Check out these pre-made patties. Don't they look amazing? More farm fresh beef being delivered to the store. Premade patties for my convenience, but farm fresh for the taste.

And while you are in the meat department, make sure you check out the Tender Ridge Angus cuts of beef. Certified tender, these meats will be delicious!

I think we've got a great cook-out put together. Fresh hamburgers from the grill, corn, baked beans and watermelon along with all our favorite varieties of pop. It will be a tasty time.

And now for the giveaway

Three lucky winners will each receive a $25 gift card from Family Fare. Enter below using the Giveaway Tools form.

Good luck to everyone!
