Closed: Ma Mi Skincare Review and Giveaway

Thanks to Ma Mi Skin Care, I had the opportunity to try some of their skin care products. I was sent the Revitalize Cleanser, Tradiant Exfoliator and Satiated Moisturizer. I was impressed by the ingredient list. Everything is natural and I could read the ingredient list without a dictionary sitting next to me.

From the website:
Our mission at Ma Mi is to help moms and expecting moms around the world look and feel healthy, youthful, and vibrant by providing a highly effective, natural , and safe skin care line made to address their unique needs.

Everything we do is firmly grounded in a belief that purity is essential to your skin’s health. We strongly believe in working in harmony with your body’s inherent renewal abilities to promote and protect healthy, glowing skin.

With Ma Mi, your skin receives everything it needs and nothing it doesn't; our products contain pure, highly concentrated active ingredients that produce quick, visible results. In a few simple steps you can experience dramatic, positive changes in your skins health and appearance.
The cleanser has a lovely smooth feel and a light scent. I know some people are into fragrance-free, but I've learned that in skincare, fragrance-free is often more harsh than natural fragrance. It takes more chemicals to take the smell out than to leave the natural smell in. I also avoid fragrance-added products because they use chemicals to add the scent to the product.

The exfoliator really felt great going on. I could tell within a few days that it was working. I wanted to use the moisturizer, but the sample I received didn't work right so I was unable to use it. But, I do know it's important to moisturize (even if you have oily skin) so I used my own to finish up.

What I liked was how easy it was to work this into my routine. It's mainly recommended for night so I would cleanse then exfoliate. You should leave the exfoliator on for a few mintues so I'd change into my pajamas. Then I'd rinse off the exfoliator and follow with moisturizer. My skin felt softer and I'm excited to keep using the products as I believe they will help my skin. My hope is that I would have less blemishes over time.

Exciting news...Ma Mi Skin Care is going to send one of Coolestmommy’s readers a sample pack of skin care products.

Hockey Games are Fun

Over Christmas Break, we had the opportunity to go see a hockey game with my folks, my sis and bro and our whole family. We made quite the parade into the arena.

Rebekah practiced hitting a puck (with the Chilly hat) and the nice man gave her a puck as a souvenir.

Andrew & Tio played hockey. (Or Andrew played and Tio tried to mess him up.) I think it leveled the playing field for the littler kids.

Our Tio pulled a few strings and managed to get the mascot to come by our seats to take photos (there were cheerleaders with him) and give the kids a gift bag.

(Rebekah keeps pointing out that the cheerleaders belly buttons were showing. I guess she gets in trouble for showing hers because she lifts her shirt over her head. We're trying to explain belly buttons are ok, rest of body is not.)

We got to experience the whole gamut of events while there. The game went into overtime, then to a shootout. We had to go through about 10 rounds of shootouts until our team won. Hooray! It was Guns & Hoses night so the firefighters and police were there and did an exhibition game after the big game.

I had to get a self-portrait of Sean & I to prove I do attend family events.

The kids had fun, we had fun, our team won, it was an unforgettable night.

Wordless Wednesday

Life is not measured
by the number of breaths we take,
but by the moments that take our breath away.

Sean & I had the honor and privilege of joining the January 2011 Students of Distinction for a VIP Luncheon today. You'll notice the reason we were invited was because our own VIP was one of the students recognized.

The Students of Distinction is a Student of the Month selection made by teachers and staff. The principal shared with us that only about 10% of the students at school will ever receive this honor. Andrew was selected for sharing and modeling the School Five--the five pillars of action and character that they strive to embody as a school.

I was amazed that all the kids at the table knew the School Five and could give examples of applying to life. The School Five are:
1. Be Safe
2. Be Responsible
3. Be Respectful
4. Be Prepared
5. Be Ready to Learn

The principal encouraged them as leaders and pointed out that those who achieve the most success in life are those who follow these pillars in the workplace. The most successful person is not always the smartest, it's the one that people look up to and can identify with. She spoke of the heart of the person being the most important thing because the rest can all be taught.

We are so proud of Andrew and the recognition of his leadership and heart. We had a great lunch and enjoyed seeing our son shine.

Tips on Tuesday: Take Time for You

I hope everyone had a great couple of weeks. Some of you noticed that I didn't end up posting a Tips on Tuesday post last week. I thought about trying to back-post later in the week, but chose not to. I decided to take time for me (and my family). We had a great week--nothing bad happened--but it was busy. Rebekah had some closure to a class she's been in and had to say goodbye to some friends but we also started a new chapter and she is meeting new friends.

Andrew started looking at high schools. While this is still a year and a half away, we got some great advice from parents who have been down this road before. We have a choice of  high schools. Each one has a different area of emphasis and there have been a lot of open houses going on. My head is spinning with course offerings, electives and Honors vs. AP vs. Duel-enrollment classes. In some ways, I hate the pressure to pick the 'right' high school when most kids don't know what they want to be when they grow up. In other ways, I'm glad we can find a good fit for him and his goals, aspirations and strengths.

And Nathan has been plodding along and trying to finish up some therapy. He has been in Vision Therapy since October. If all goes well, next week will be his last appointment. It will free 20-30 minutes a day of time that we won't have to be doing vision exercises. (I'm probably more excited than he is!)

In the midst of all the family shenanigans, I had the chance to go out with friends last week. One set of friends I haven't seen for almost 6 months. It was a wonderful time of eating too much, talking too much and laughing too much. It was a great time and I really needed a little break with some girls. I had a working meeting one night (but we ate at a restaurant so I considered it a night out for me) and I had the chance to start scrap booking again. I haven't been able to muster the time or energy for a year and when I sat down with my albums, I realized how much I really miss taking pictures and creating pages for my children, grand-children and hopefully great-grandchildren to enjoy.

And all of the back-story brings me to my tip for today. Take Time For You! Especially if you're a mom. I find moms to be notorious for putting everything and everyone in front of themselves. This comes down to time, money, food, etc. We do it for our spouse, our kids, our friends--but we don't end up doing special things for ourselves. So I encourage you to take time--right now!!--and call a friend you haven't talked to in a while. Or make a date with your spouse or a friend to go out. Even if you go grab a $1 pop at McDonald's, make time to spend together face to face. Rediscover a hobby or take a little time to watch a show on TV that's just for you. I can't tell you how much better my crazy week has gone because I took some time last week to recharge.

I always realize after the fact that I'm a better wife/mother/friend/daughter/sister after I take time out for me. Yet, I don't always prioritize my life to give myself the time that I need to take a break. I've decided I need to keep giving myself some time and have scheduled some future events to give me a little break. It helps that I have a supportive husband (who practically threw me out the door the other night so I'd go and take a break), but even if you don't have that support at home, I know it's possible to make it work. It might be a little more difficult to plan, but the results are that much sweeter.

I challenge you to make time for yourself. Schedule it into your calendar...in ink...and stick to it. I think you'll like the results.

CLOSED: Learning Workroom Educational Software Review and Giveaway

I don't know about you, but I am always looking for ways to facilitate lessons learned in the classroom. I'm especially interested in finding ways to keep my kids sharp over breaks. Christmas break, Spring Break and Summer Vacation are all times when I see my kids losing some of what they have learned. I am well aware that getting your kids to practice the skills they have learned helps keep them from losing comprehension and skills.

When I heard about the Steps to Success software from  Learning Workroom, I was intrigued. I see it as a software that would be a great addition to homeschool curriculum as well as a supplement for kids in school and/or on break. The software is designed to make learning fun and to help children succeed in school and on state tests.

Software Available:
Math - Gr. 3-4
Math Gr. 5-6
Science Gr. 3-5
English Language Arts Gr.3-6
You can purchase the software here.

The Science CD was awarded a 2010 Media of the Year Award from Creative Child Magazine. The software provides an easy way for parents to help their children achieve academic success.

The software is a PowerPoint presentation that your child can click through. I like how it has facts plus matching exercises, word scrambles and questions in a quiz format. I got the Mathmatics for Grades 3-4 for Nathan. He's in this grade range and I thought he'd enjoy it. There were parts he had a great time with, but I never thought about how much he loves math. He's advanced enough in some areas that he would have prefered the CD for Grade 5-6 for those things. So Nathan told me some of the stuff was a bit old news, but he really liked the rest.

Nathan and I also like the downloadable worksheets found on the site. Our favorite is the Number Sense Word Search. I also liked the multiplication charts as we started working on multiplication facts. I signed up for the FREE Worksheets from Learning Workroom.

One of Coolestmommy’s readers will win their choice of a software CD.

Remembering the Warmth of the South

Here are the kids in their shorts on the first day of winter. It was so warm in the south. We took the kids to a big park and let them run around and play and enjoy the great outdoors. We're holding onto those warm thoughts now as we freeze our tootsies off.

Rebekah couldn't get enough swings.

Nathan on the slides.

Andrew & Poppa take Rebekah to the swings. They had looked at the birds and ducks while the little ones played on the equipment.

Christmas Highlights

Here are some highlights of our Christmas gift openings. We ended up having three Christmas events. We did some before we left town, had Christmas morning and then did our family when we got home. So the clothes/locations change, but the fun and love stayed the same.

Christmas morning we start with cinnamon rolls and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus.

Rebekah had fun 'helping' everyone open gifts.

Personalized back pack cinch sacks.

My review:
I thought the RelaxZen Night formula worked well. I used it one night when I was fighting off insomnia. On a 'typical' night, I'd be up from 3am to 5:30 or 6am and then sleep until my alarm goes off around 6:45-7am. I woke up around 3am and took the RelaxZen Night drink. (Doesn't taste bad, sort of a berry flavor and it's small enough to drink it down quickly.) I was feeling sleepy by 3:30am and went back to bed. I dozed a bit in that not quite asleep but not really awake place and know I was back asleep by 4am. I really thought this worked great. I didn't wake up feeling 'hungover' like many sleep herbs/aids make you feel in the morning.

The RelaxZen Day was much harder for me to judge. I took it on a day where I had a lot to do and couldn't figure out how to get it all done. I wasn't feeling overly stressed, but it mentions assisting with focus and I thought I could use some extra focus that day. I did feel calm all afternoon long after taking it, and I was able to get a lot accomplished. I think I'd need to try this product in more of a high-stress situation to see if it really takes my stress levels down a notch or two.

As a reminder to anyone considering taking the RelaxZen products, please lease remember that this product should not be used without first consulting a doctor.

SAVINGS ALERT: Coolestmommy's readers can use the coupon code SMILE at Thirstmonger.com. The code SMILE will give you 10% off plus free shipping on any RelaxZen product. Code expires January 31, 2011.

Three (3) of Coolestmommy’s readers will win a sample pack of a RelaxZen Day and a RelaxZen Night.

Tips on Tuesday: One Little Word 2011

The past two years, I took the "One Little Word" challenge. If you'd like to see all the posts, click this link. The idea behind it is to meditate and pray and find what one little word God wants you to focus on this year. For me, the year 2009 brought the word Cherish. In 2010, I focused on Engaged (not as in getting married--as in being engaged in the moment). I've been thinking about 2011 for almost a month. I had nothing...no inkling of what my word would be, no direction in how to find it, nada.

Yet, isn't it funny how God uses the smallest and most unusual things to speak to us sometimes? I did have an inkling and I had more than a little direction--I just didn't recognize it at the time. This past week, I was finally able to connect the dots and find my word.

Here were the dots I had to connect:
Sean and I are tithers. We believe in giving 10% of our income as the tithe. In the past few months, we've been listening to Ron Kenoly's song "Give and it will come back to you" (good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over). Love that song, always have. It's straight from the scriptures and we learned when we actually stick to the tithe, it does come back in good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over.

Have you seen the billboards? One of the plane in the Hudson that says "Cool Under Cabin Pressure--Preparation--Pass It On". One is of Edison with a light bulb and it says, "On the 10,000th try, there was light--Optimism--Pass it On". We love these billboards and as a family try to spot as many as we can. We talk about what they mean and have had fascinating conversations with our kids about the values promoted on a sign.

Then came the commercials. I've seen several, but the one that grabs me every time is the one called "The Race." I have yet to watch that commercial without tears. It gets me and I always say to myself, "I want to be that kid...I want to make a difference, too."

I went out to the http://www.values.com/ website to see what The Foundation for a Better Life really stands for. I love their billboards, love the TV commercials, might as well see what it's all about. I suggest you take a look sometime, too.

From there, I went to You Tube to find the song "I believe there are angels among us". It's an Alabama song. I found their music video and the video is showing off ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things in their daily lives. A volunteer who teaches immigrants to read English, a person dedicated to stopping drug use in his neighborhood, a girl who saved her dad's life because she knew CPR. It was here that I finally connected the dots God had been placing before me. I want to give something back. I want to be a blessing to my friends, my family and to the world--but that's more than one word.

I've pondered and narrowed down to my one word. Give. That encompasses a lot. I want to give more to my family and friends. I want to give of my time, my energy and my possessions. I have been blessed by friends who hand down clothes to me and I'm becoming intentional about giving those things to the next person to use.

I saw one of those Clean Sweep shows where he really came down hard on the woman for trying to hang onto everything. He told her that when she keeps her hand fisted around her possessions, she can't receive the bigger blessing because her hand isn't open to accept it. The impact that statement had on me should have been another clue to me. I want to be better at blessing others. I don't give to get, but I get because I give.

All this boils down to my word, Give. I have the desire to do great things, but am seeing that the kindness of a moment often means more then a large act. I may not be able to change the world, but I can give from my heart and make my corner of the world a better place.

I'll let you know where this word takes me this year. I get excited each year to see where I'm going to end up.

Review: MyCoupons Textbook Rentals

I was asked by MyCoupons to share with you about the Textbook Rental coupons they have. First off, I had no idea that you could even rent textbooks. What a great idea!!! When I was in college, I only kept books related to my major--and not even all of those. I was always looking for inexpensive used books to purchase and then resell back to the bookstore. I remember times they wouldn't even purchase the books back and I didn't want to keep them.

If you'd like to see the coupons available for textbook rentals, head over to this link.  Some additional places to find MyCoupons on the web include their Facebook Page and their Twitter stream.

If you've never used MyCoupons before, here's an informational video about MyCoupons giving you the basics on how to use.

If you are in need of textbooks or want to save money on many everyday purchases, be sure to check out MyCoupons.com.

Review: Baby Bond Nursing Band & Discount

Thank you to the folks at Baby Bond for allowing me to have a friend review one of their nursing bands. I asked my friend Mrs. D to try this one out for me. It looks like a terrific concept for any nursing mom. I only wish I was still nursing so I could try it for myself!

The idea is that with a Baby Bond, you can Nurse, Converse and Bond all at the same time. I love the idea of leaving baby's face open as they can get so hot under nursing blankets. At the same time, you don't have to expose your back, your tummy or your breasts to anyone. You are completely covered while baby is not.

Mrs. D said,
"The nursing band worked o.k., but not that great with my 12 month old. I love the fact that it's hands free. You don't have to worry about it falling off. I also really like the material and the color of it. If you are nursing a younger baby, it would work great, but my little girl constantly pulled at the material which means I didn't stay covered. I think this is a great product as long as you don't have a baby that pulls it off you!"

She also told me that she's excited to have this product in her mommy-arsenal. Now she can use it from the beginning with her next child. She thinks that if a child is younger and gets used to it, you would have a hassle-free time during nursing.

Baby Bond is available online or now is also carried in and Babies R Us Online or in stores! If you're looking for a way to discretely nurse in public--or at home--Baby Bond has several styles and options for you.

Great news for CoolestMommy Readers:
BabyBond is offering a 75% discount* on their site for any reader who orders a BabyBond on BabiesRUs.com. Now you will be able to buy 2 BabyBonds for less than $46!!! All you need to do is email a copy of your receipt from Babies R Us to missy@babybondnursing.com, and she will reply with a 75% off discount code to order another BabyBond on their site with 75% off.
*Must purchase from Babies R Us and email within four (4) days of this post and order the second one from Baby Bond within 24 hours of receiving discount code.

I received the product mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commissions 16 CFR, Part 255 Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising. Happy New Year 2011

About Me

My name is Robyn and I'm mom to three wonderful children and a my husband (also occasionally known as my fourth child). My kids are now in high school (Andrew), middle school (Nathan) and elementary school (Rebekah). I started blogging as a way to connect my extended family to the events and happenings of our home, but found my blog spiraling into new areas and directions. I've been able to use my love of writing and PR to help introduce products and services to readers. The reviews and giveaways took off and now I try to offer an eclectic mix of family, fun, tips, reviews and giveaways.

My kids are my joy, so when you learn about me, you learn about them.
Andrew loves music and band and he joins many clubs and activities (he gets that from me). He was one of the youngest members of a competitive indoor percussion group last year--we're very proud. He is also kind and generous with his time. He volunteers for many groups that serve the under-served.
Nathan loves music, Star Wars and Ninjas. He is on the autism spectrum and has inspired me to become involved with the Autism Society. I'm on the state board and co-chair the annual fundraising walk in our area. Nathan is a Twice Exceptional (2E) child. That means he's extremely gifted and has a learning disability (in his case, autism). I blog occasionally at www.coolestchildren.com to help offer insight and support to other parents living with autism.
Rebekah is the baby, the only girl and is spoiled rotten by her father, her brothers...and possibly me. She loves all things pink and princess and she always looks darling in her skirts, ruffles and tutus while running down the soccer field or playing in the muck with the neighborhood boys. She's a fantastic girly-girl tomboy who loves to color and cuddle.
